Ketchum, ID — Frank Rich—longtime New York Times theater critic turned opinion columnist and now writer at large for New York magazine—will speak in Ketchum on Sunday, October 14.

His talk will focus on the presidential election and is the first in the Sun Valley Center for the Arts 2012–2013 Lecture Series. It will be held at the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood at 6:30 pm.

A powerhouse in journalism who was known as the “Butcher of Broadway” for the amount of influence he wielded as a theater critic, Rich became an Op-Ed columnist for the Times in 1994 after 13 years as the paper’s drama critic. His columns, published in the paper’s Sunday Week in Review section, often discussed politics. He continues to write about politics at New York magazine and nymag.com but also opines on popular culture in general, the media and current events.

“Frank Rich is a brilliant writer who is known for speaking his mind. No doubt he will have plenty of provocative comments about the upcoming presidential election,” says Britt Udesen, The Center’s Director of Education & Humanities. “The timing of his talk couldn’t be better—it’s two days before the second presidential debate and three days after the vice presidential debate, so there’ll be no lack of things to talk about.”

A graduate of Harvard University, Rich received the George Polk Award for commentary in 2005. In 2011 he received the Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism from Harvard University. He has written about politics and culture for many publications and is the author of The Greatest Story Ever Sold: The Decline and Fall of Truth from 9/11 to Katrina (2006) and a memoir, Ghost Light (2000).

Tickets to the lecture are available online at www.sunvalleycenter.org. Members can buy series tickets for all five lectures at a discounted price of $112.50 (other speakers are author Daniel Handler aka Lemony Snicket, writer Richard Rodriguez, Vice Admiral Robert S. Harward and novelist Tim O’Brien). A special Editor’s Series Ticket, which helps defray the cost of presenting the series and includes preferred seating, a luncheon and a reception with Frank Rich, is available for $500 ($350 tax deductible).

Individual tickets to the Frank Rich lecture are $30 members / $40 nonmembers / $20 students. Tickets can also be purchased by phone at 208.726.9491 ex 10 or stop by The Center in Ketchum.

The Sun Valley Center Lecture Series is sponsored in part by the Castellano Wood Family. Additional support for the Frank Rich lecture comes in part from Gail and Rhys Wilkie.
