The work of Esther Traugot reflects the concerns of her time and place and cohorts who live in areas that offer access to abundant natural resources yet are aware of the negative impact their own choices can have on their fortunate circumstances. In “gilding” branches with meticulously crocheted marigold-yellow yarn, for example, she addresses the often futile attempts to prop up something that is broken, casting it as a precious object to be cherished in its new form. What is it we really value? How long will it last? Traugot’s tender treatment of an object that was once part of a living tree invites us to explore our choices too.
Traugot is an emerging Sonoma County artist who received her BFA from the University of California, Berkeley in 2005, her MFA from Mills College in 2009, and whose work has been included in museum exhibitions in Northern California and internationally in Bogotá, Columbia, to celebrate the United Nation’s year of biodiversity declaration in 2010.
Esther Traugot is among the Sonoma artists represented in the current exhibition at Friesen Gallery, TERROIR.10% of the proceeds from sales of the exhibition will directly benefit the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.
