Friesen Gallery: Don Williams --- The Kinship of Fog and Pastel

Fog is seductive. It envelopes us, muffles our ability to see and be seen, stifles our ability to be heard or grasp the distance between ourselves and others. Don Williams takes masterful advantage of the kinship that fog shares with pastel, using microscopic flecks of pure pigment that act as little prisms, bouncing reflected light and color in a hundred directions at once.

The five pastel artworks created specially for this exhibition, entrance---the prospects for storytelling are plentiful.  They beg questions and answers will be elusive. That’s the seduction --- imagining the story or perhaps remembering some place in our personal history --- where fog enveloped us, creating an illusion of being in a world all our own.  Williams may be recalling his childhood in Lincoln, Nebraska where fog typically descended in winter, or looking back to his days in New Orleans while earning his MFA at Tulane University--- where thick fog settled among the courtyards and harbors, dropping a veil around his intimate world .

Don Williams is among the Sonoma artists represented in the current exhibition at Friesen Gallery, TERROIR.  10% of the proceeds from sales of the exhibition will directly benefit the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.
